Mission

The Biobank of the Faculty of Medicine of Comenius University in Bratislava is a research-oriented facility focused on the systematic collection, processing, and storage of human biological material for scientific and research purposes. Its aim is to create high-quality and reliable biological sample resources that contribute to a better understanding of disease mechanisms and support the development of modern, personalised medicine. The biobank primarily specialises in biological material obtained from patients with rare genetically determined diseases and from patients with degenerative disorders. All collected samples are processed in accordance with applicable ethical and legislative requirements and are used exclusively for research purposes. A key aspect of the biobank’s operation is close cooperation with clinical and diagnostic departments, in particular with the Department of Clinical Genetics of the University Hospital Bratislava and the Institute of Pathological Anatomy of the Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University and University Hospital Bratislava. These departments participate in the expert analysis of samples and link clinical information with molecular and pathological findings, enabling a comprehensive view of the diseases under investigation. Through interdisciplinary collaboration between research and clinical practice, the biobank provides a stable foundation for translational research and supports the implementation of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in clinical practice.
