BIOFORD

Systemic Public Infrastructure – Biobank for Cancer and Rare Diseases is a project focused on the establishment and development of a national biobank infrastructure that ensures the systematic collection, processing, long-term storage, and sharing of biological samples and associated data for research into cancer and rare diseases.

The BIOFORD project is funded from the European Structural and Investment Funds, co-financed by the European Union, through the Operational Programme Integrated Infrastructure and the Slovakia Programme.

The project is coordinated by the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin, Comenius University in Bratislava, and implemented in cooperation with the following partner institutions:

  • University of Žilina
  • National Institute of Rheumatic Diseases in Piešťany
  • Biomedical Research Center of the Slovak Academy of Sciences
  • Center of Social and Psychological Sciences of the Slovak Academy of Sciences
  • National Cancer Institute in Bratislava
  • Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic

The project is being implemented between 2020 and 2026 and consists of two phases.

BIOFORD supports the integration of clinical practice with biomedical research, the implementation of unified quality standards, ethical and legal principles, and integration into international research infrastructures.

DIGIBIOBANK

Digital Biobank Infrastructure is a project focused on the digitalization and modernization of biobank processes in Slovakia with the aim of improving the management, quality, interoperability, and accessibility of biomedical data linked to biological samples. The project supports the development of a national digital biobanking system enabling advanced data integration, analysis, and reuse for biomedical research.

The DIGIBIOBANKA project is funded from the European Structural and Investment Funds, co-financed by the European Union, through the Operational Programme Integrated Infrastructure.
 

The project is led by the University of Žilina and implemented in cooperation with key partner institutions – Comenius University in Bratislava and the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic. The project consists of two phases and is being implemented during the period 2020-2027.

DIGIBIOBANKA contributes to the integration of clinical and research data, implementation of standardized digital and data solutions, and the use of advanced tools in bioinformatics, biostatistics, and artificial intelligence. The project strengthens the connection between clinical practice and biomedical research and supports integration into national and international research infrastructures.

GRANT - FUNDING OF THE NATIONAL RESEARCH INFTRASTRUCTURE PLATFORM BBMRI.sk

The grant awarded by the Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth of the Slovak Republic for 2026 is intended for all members of the BBMRI.sk national node and supports its long-term, systematic development as a functional, coordinated and sustainable research infrastructure. The funding is aimed at strengthening the organizational, procedural and quality foundations of the node in line with the principles and recommendations of BBMRI‑ERIC.

It supports activities related to governance and coordination of the national node, analysis of its functioning and user community needs, development of standardized processes, professional training, communication, outreach and methodological support for members.

The overall objective is to build a stable national platform that enables effective networking of academic institutions, healthcare providers and regulated collaboration with the private sector, thereby enhancing trust, transparency and readiness for future national and international collaborations.
