What does the ELSI acronym stand for and why is it important in biobanking?
ELSI stands for Ethical, Legal and Social Issues. In biobanking, these aspects play a crucial role because the storage of human biological material raises many questions that extend far beyond laboratory practice. Properly addressing them ensures that the collection, storage, and use of biological samples and related data are carried out not only in accordance with applicable laws, but also in line with ethical principles and societal expectations.
Donation of biological samples: Informed Consent
Biobanks rely on individuals who voluntarily decide to donate their biological material and related data for research purposes. One of the fundamental principles of medical ethics is informed consent. This ensures that biobanks work with samples only when donors have been fully informed in advance and have freely agreed to their use for scientific purposes.
The informed consent document usually explains:
- the purpose for which the samples will be used,
- what biological material will be collected,
- possible risks and benefits,
- how the donor’s personal data will be protected,
- how the biobank will handle the samples.
The decision to donate a sample is always voluntary and has no impact on the healthcare provided to the donor.
Types of informed consent
Biobanks use several types of informed consent, which mainly differ in the scope of sample use.
- Broad informed consent allows the use of samples for future research projects that may not yet be precisely defined at the time the consent is signed.
- Project-specific informed consent limits the use of samples to a particular research study or project.
- Dynamic consent is a modern digital approach in which donors receive information about new research projects through an online platform and can continuously decide which projects they wish to participate in.
Protection of personal data
An important component of ELSI is the protection of donors’ personal data. Biobanks primarily use anonymization or pseudonymization when handling data.
- Anonymization means that all identifying information has been permanently removed and the donor can no longer be identified.
- Pseudonymization means that identifying information is replaced with a code. The donor’s true identity is stored separately and access to it is strictly controlled.
With pseudonymization, re-identification is possible only in exceptional situations, for example if the donor decides to withdraw consent or wishes to receive information about research results obtained from their samples.
Ethical aspects of biobanking
Biobanking raises many ethical challenges. One of them concerns whether and how donors should be informed about research findings. For example, research may reveal a genetic predisposition to a serious disease, which represents highly sensitive information. It is therefore important that donors have the opportunity to decide in advance whether they wish to be informed about such findings.
Since the successful operation of biobanks depends largely on public trust, every research project involving human samples must be approved by an ethics committee, which oversees compliance with these principles.
Legal aspects of biobanking
A clear legal framework is essential to ensure donor protection, research transparency, and public trust in biobanking. From the perspective of biobank development, specific legislation regulating the storage of biological samples for future research is particularly important.
Social aspects of biobanking
Many people still do not fully understand the role biobanks play in medical research. Raising public awareness is therefore crucial – when people understand how biobanks operate, their willingness to participate and donate samples naturally increases. Through their decision, every donor directly contributes to scientific discoveries that have the potential to improve and save lives both today and in the future.
